My specs are:
Pentium 4, 3.00GHz on HT 2.0GB RAM PC 3200 200GB HDD GeForce 7800GT, 256MB, Overclocked
And my BF2 doesn't run that well.. I've got my settings at:
800x600 (For a windowed version; my monitor doesn't doesn't look good greater than 1028x768) on 60Hz refresh rates. All medium settings with 2x AA 90%distance scale.
I mean I get 40-80 FPS, 40 being huge firefights, but when I crank some stuff up (distance scale 100%, 1-2 settings to high), my FPS drops down to 20-40.
I'm thinking about upgrading my comp, but I'm just wondering what I should upgrade.
Or buy one of those good computers for a cheap amount of money ($400 or so), and then just upgrade it. I've already found a good one I could use, but I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on something.
BTW, my mobo is horrible, so that may be a part of it.

hmm seems like a decent enuff system.... but it could be ur MB, check her FSB especailly make sure it lines up with all ur other hardware, i dont use AA, might try turning that off, sometimes it works great, other times i find it costs u, never quit sure why...

I'm not really sure what you mean by lining up w/ my other hardware. I just know that my FSB of the mobo is: 200MHz Real Clock and 800MHz for the effective clock. Bandwitdh is 6400MB/s and it's 64-bit.
What am I looking for in the GPU/processor/RAM?
RAM stats: 64-bit width, DDR SDRAM, PC3200 (200MHz) Memory timing at 200MHz: 3-4-4-8 (lol)
GPU: GPU Clock: 275MHz RAMDAC: 400MHz Memory clock: 1050MHz Real Clock: 526MHz (DDR) Effective Clock: 1053MHz
I'm not really sure what everything here means, I'm just trying to find links w/ the FSB, since I'm not really good w/ computer hardware.
The reason I like to keep AA, even at 2x is that at lower resolutions, I find it very noticable when you have no AA. with 1024x768, I wouldn't mind no AA.

DONT buy a AMD. That aint gonna help solve your problem. I have the same exact computer like yours, by my graphic card is worse. P4 3.0 2g of GELI ram (runing dule with 4 512 sticks) 5900 ultra 256, (i know i have to upgrade) 2 HD. .. 74g western digital RAPTOR 10,000 rpm running as serial. Ause p4p800 Motherboard 800 FSB ----- so their you have, simliar computer. I am running my game on mostly LOW graphics and 800 by 600 with 75 refresh. I get around 40-50 fps i think but it runs SMOOTH! I have it cracked to 100 distance view too... ------ Ok... Heres the deal bro.. what driver are you running for your Nvidia? Because when i run the latest driver for my card, i LAG LIKE HECK in SF! So i downloaded the 84.21 driver off nvidia and it runs smooth! I notice a big change. Also how meny programs are running in your background? Have you tryed doing "msconfig" yet? I notice i load a little bit faster into the servers then you... well by a lot hehe. Although your like the 3rd person who always joins the server after the map gets done loading, i am usualy capting the flag by then ... You just got to have your pc set up the right way bro. Your computer should run smoother then mine because of your graphics card... Its your settings ... Also, turn down your graphic cards control thing... change everything to proformace instead of qulity.. EDIT Another thing.... if all fails, dont go rush to buy a new pc. Try to reformat your computer 2 times in a row... I know it fixed phantom computer

Another thing... I keep my bad boy healthy. I reformat my computer every 6 months, no later then that... sometimes i even reformat after 4th or 5th month when i notice i am getting to much crap on it... I think that is why my big beast been running well all these years.

I bet if you just tweaked your settings a bit and shut down some of the background programs it would be fine.
What sort of ping are you getting when you get the low frame rates? Does the server you play on have a ping cap? I notice I get low frame rates when some has a ping over 175 or so.
On my old CPU, I have a 3.4 HT, 2GB of PC 4200 and an Nvidia 6800GT 256mb. I can run the detail very high and my FPS never drops below 40, on the most ridiculous firefights.

Well, when I play, I usually just have the basic Windows XP background tasks, xfire, and TS running. A few other little things may be on (Less than 4), but that's it.
And when I get the low FPS, my ping is usually about normal to when I get high FPS (50-80 ping).

Pretty darn high; I'll check next time I run BF2.

For what its worth - With BF2 running in a window, I am seeing a 50/50 split across my cores, 600 MB of memory being used (i have 2GB installed) and 756 pf usage.
I have yet to see what this yeilds in a FPS metric.

Actually, I have about the same stuff (I'm running in a window).
I'm not sure if my FPS is the same though (steady).
