Hello, I have had a Maxtor HD for about 4 years now. I was using it on different computers and it worked fine. This HD used to be a MAIN BOOTUP HD but I one time did a stupid thing and took it out and hooked it up to another pc as a SECOND HD. I figured since it was a second HD, I deleted the WINDOWS folder to save room. Now when I hooked the HD back to the original pc to reformat, it won’t boot up. And also, it stopped showing up as a second HD when I try to re-plug it back to the second pc.....
Any who, I tried reformatting. I inserted the xp pro cd and blue screen loaded. Everything is going fine. Then as soon as all the drivers start to load from the xp cd, it stops and says this.
"An unexpected error (0) occurred at line 1768 in D:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c. Press any key to continue”
I tried using a different xp cd but still the same problem. So I assume the HD is either dead or has some kind of an error. Can this be fixed or does anyone know or have seen this before? Thanks ahead of time

Given that error Surge and the dated state of your HD (4 years is nearing end of life), it is quite possible that ESD could have occured and shorted out a component in the HD from moving it around all those years. Not only that, but if ESD did occur it would be more susceptible to causing permanent damage to a HD that is older, such as yours, due to the components worn state. Otherwise, as the error states, it would also seem a possibility that the boot sector of the HD has been corrupted/damaged. Either that or it is refering to the installation process not getting past the boot sector installation for Windows. Either way, I am not sure if reformatting will fix this problem since reformatting does not touch the master boot sector of the HD....but you never know, it doesn't hurt to try. If it is the master boot sector then it will have to be repaired AND reformatted anyway.
