My dad's old company did alot of testing on pentiums and AMD's, research type stuff. Now this was a few years ago but at that time they found the AMD's ran slightly faster and preformed slightly better than pentiums of the same speed (i.e. an AMD 700 mhz ran a little better than a penium 700) The only downside was that they did produce a little more heat in doing this, Now this was awhile ago, but Ive been loyal to AMDs since then and ave been quite happy ;D Yes i knew about AMD's running at a faster rate of speed then p4. BUT, my buddy just got AMD and after like 8 months of using it, the fan on AMD broke off and the proccesor burned But if you noticed how increable cheap AMD's are. I am just sticking with P4 because its really reliable and has a way smaller chance of having any problems. I personally had my p3 751 for over 4 years now. I bought my Sony for about 2,000 dollars (remember back in the day computers were spendy) and i havnt had any problems with it. My computer is not loud, it doesnt even require a fan believe it or not on my pc i only got a fan on my power supple if i remember correctly. But yes paying 187 dollars for p4 2.53 is kind of spendy, but i just want to avoid future problems.
AMD's if they say its a 700, that means it WILL run at 700 most of the times, Pen other hand say if its a 700 that means its max will go around 700 but its not always runing at 700 like ADM's do which cause the AMD's to overheat sometimes.

This brings me to tears. All I will say is Intel sucks, go with AMD but to each his own. By the way, the P4 is slower than the P3, I have used all kinds of processors and I rank intel at the bottom of the list. Get a heatsink, a fan, and an AMD Athlon or wait for the hammer to come out. Always use a fan and a heatsink, luck is a bad thing to count on.

a guy like who? lol lets see here, my AMD has a huge heat sink with a fan on it then the CPU case has 2 green LED fans with a third one coming, this of course keeps the case nice and cool despite the Green Cathode bar inside, the BEAST is the Fast N the Furious of CPUs

Surge, buddy , go with your instincts.
We all have our preferences..I have gone with both intel and AMD in the past, I just go with AMD because of cost and what i get with it. AMD has always been cheaper, but thats just their style since they came into existence. They actually have caused INTEL to drop their prices to become competitive.
There are positives and negatives to both processor, I go with AMD out of choice because of my experiences. Either way upgrading your system is a good thing.
So go with your aces

Thanks but whats better for gameing? p4 2.53 or AMD?
I dont care about the money lets just say, i am just trying to build a good game system that will last me a few years or so.

Honestly man...i can't honestly say...both companies will bost their own products..I have had great luck with AMDs..., but then i know people who have great luck with INTEL....it all depends on what your into.
What I would do is search the net for good review sites...looking for some myself at the moment, but take a look at the fps or other tests.
thats the best i can do man..sorry =)

What is boils down to is: How money do you want to spend? If you don't mind spending money on a good processor, I would recommend a P4. That is simply for the security factor. If your heatsink ever fails your P4 is not going to go with it. The P4 is designed so that it will lower its speed if it gets too hot. This could save you money in the long run. However, if you want more performance/cost, then go AMD. They are typically faster when solely comparing processors of the same price. BUT, if your heatsink ever dies you can kiss your AMD and your probably your motherboard goodbye. They are supposed to turn off when they get too hot, but I don't know if trust that. Just my 2 cents. Ravanux FYI, I have an AMD. Intel sux!

A heatsink is just a brick of metal... how can that fail? The fan can fail but not the heatsink. Get a mobo that monitors temp and then set the warnings like me. I live in Texas and hate air conditioning. I run this thing to the max in 110F climates and the thing has only warned me once, of course I am a geek and live to cool my system but that is a whole other forum. The AMD is hands down better, I use P4 2Ghz in the lab at school and cant wait to get home to my Athlon 1.53. Granted I did not setup the machines at school but if you have a good idea of what u r doing, which you do surge, go with the AMD.

Well I simply said heatsink because hsf (HeatSinkFan unit) is a little confusing and they typically come together. Not to start a fight about syntax, lol! But you've got the idea... Ravanux

I understand... I am an engineer, just a little anal sometimes. I fully agree with you, if you dont already know ... Intel sucks.

Intel all the way ;D
Dang you guys got me thinking for a minute. See i ant rich as you guys to by a new AMD every 5 months hehe. P4 just moved up to 3ghz and what about AMD? I think ADM is going to be stuck for a long time because its already hot as hell in those AMD users cases. But Intel just keeps on going and going, i wonder what the AMD's next move going to be.

actually ive heard the new pentium sint exactly stable, a lilttle rushed actually, so AMD hasnt moved up that fast. Cooling the AMDs isnt that difficult i think, fans are cheap and well made, i got 3 in my system and that does her just fine, I havent heard an AMD cooling problem for 4 years now and that was cause my buddy was overclocking it with one weak ass fan
