Can any of you guys give me some insight on how to reformat a PC? I've never done it before and I'm thinking about selling my laptop. I'm thinking I should reformat before I sell it so people won't go ballistick. Any help would be appreciated.

You really wan't to do a low level format or get a program called eraser. Do 35 passes on the actual hard drive. It will basically erase everything on the hard drive by doing 35 passes of 1's and 0's randomly so that no one will be able to extract any info off of the hard drive. Look up low level format or the program eraser. Might also want to google reformating hard drive and see what comes up. Just don't put the xp disk and format that way before you do a lowlevel or 35 pass. Hope that helps.

I agree w/ Vodka, don't re-install xp until you are sure that you got EVERYTHING off of there. Some people are skilled enough to find things that are supposed to have been deleted in a general wipe. Good program recommendation btw

Except if you reformat THAT way then you are not only reformatting the HD, you are reformatting what the HD LOOKS LIKE.

well cobra? Did you succeed in re-formating or finding out how to do it.....
Funny story, there are people out there that go to garage sales and buy old laptops and pc's for a couple of dollars to take them home and use expensive programs to extract information off of the hard drive such as socials, credit cards, birthdates, anything that was ever typed in and more. I think g4tv did a special where they took hard drive, soaked it in water, then poured gasaline on it, light it on fire, used a welders flame, the gave the hd to a specialist that extracts info off of hard drives for a living like for insurance companies, or if a big company lost documents in a fire, or if a hard drive fried on a server, anyways, he was still able to extract some serious information off of the plates. Even if you tried to brake them into a couple of pieces. Crazy stuff. Just let us know how it went with the formating?

Vodka, haven't had the time to mess with it as of yet. Been really bogged down with finals for school. I'm just trying to concentrate on graduating at the moment, but hopefully I'll have some time to mess with the reformatting very soon. I looked into it and found a webpage that gives you a step-by-step process on how to reformat. I'll do another search for you guys later and show you the address. Thanks for all the help, though.

35 passes is overkill.
7 is the DOD reg. I know with Network Appliance they have a product embedded in the O/S called "disk sanitizer". This was good enough for the the folks I am working with on my project.

I got my degree in 2000, after 16 years of school! I think I need like 120 credits, but I wound up with 325. I like to explore many subjects!
